A powerful 7.9 earthquake hit the coast of Peru killing around 500 people and destroying buildings.  The violent shaking carried on for around 3 minutes cutting power and wiping out roadways.  Liquefaction was probable.  What was interesting about this earthquake  was the earthquake sounds and lights.

From the city of Lima, quite a distance away from the epicenter, Bronwyn Davis told the BBC News:

"Usually you don't feel a tremor when outside, but the pavement was rippling, so I fled to the park where the ground continued to move under our feet.  What was even more frightening was the roar of the quake coupled with the sky lighting up. It was surreal - if felt like we had stepped onto the set of some war movie."

The bright flashes were captured on videos, some of which are in the submenu.  It is these lights, which were apart of the New Madrid Earthquake, that makes this incidence a candidate for being caused by a gamma ray burst.  In this case the gamma ray burst came not from the distant universe, but much closer to Earth.
