Plasmoids are often observed in space.  It is not too surprising since most of matter in space is in the plasma phase.  Where plasma differ in characteristics, for example a low energy plasma adjacent to a high energy plasma, a double layer will develop between them.  The double layer is like a membrane of a living cell in that it separates and protects the one plasma from another.  In fact it has been speculated that all of the universe is made up of these cell like structures.

It is not intuitive that plasmoids can exist within the atmosphere of Earth.  If it were not for the double layer, they could not exist.  High energy ions would very quickly steal electrons from neighboring atoms, when I say quickly, I mean at the speed of light.  However, plasmoids do exist in the atmosphere; they are called ball lightning.  Now not every scientist agrees that ball lightning is made up of plasma, but many scientists believe this to be the case.  Furthermore natural ball lightning for its size contains a lot of energy.  Ball lightning has been generated by scientists, but so far it only lasts for a few seconds when made artificially while natural ball lightning can last for minutes or even ad infinitum.

Ball lightning is generally invisible as it is a knot of magnetism and associated plasma and wave activity; however it can be visible depending on it internal wavelengths and internal components.  Ball lightning can easily move from the atmosphere into the ground or into the oceans with equal ease.  It has been seen going through walls and glass.  Sometimes balls merge and sometimes balls are ejected from larger balls.  It all depends on its energy or its electrical state.

No one is quite sure as how these knots of electromagnetism self assemble.  We know that light from the Sun is electromagnetic waves that travel in a straight line just as wind or ocean waves travel in a straight line, but sometimes wind becomes tornadoes and waves turn into whirlpools.  So under some conditions these electromagnetic waves turn into knots.  Carbon might play a role.

When people create ball lightning in a microwave, they usually use something like steel wool (which contains carbon) or wood (which contains carbon) or grapes (which contains carbon) or a pencil lead (which is pure carbon.)  Within the glob of plasma, electrical currents are in a high energy state rotating within the ball lightning.  The ball is also a resonance chamber for the waves it contains. The high energy plus the coherent waves most likely puts the carbon nucleons into an energetic state.  So that the nucleus of carbon becomes three separate alpha particles.  However the three alpha particles huddle together.  Any carbon atoms that happen to get injected into the glob of ball lightning will also in short order be converted to this plasma state.

Under certain conditions, ball lightning will produce a gamma ray burst.  Just as magnetic reconnection happens in the plasma of Earth’s magnetosphere or on the Sun and other planets, so magnetic reconnection can occur within ball lightning.  Gamma ray bursts need oxygen ions.  Under precise condition of a magnetic field, electrical currents, a static electrical field, waves that control the electrons and different waves that control ions, the oxygen ion can be finessed into letting go of a pion particle from the nucleus.  The pion which is perfectly stable within the oxygen nucleus is composed of a quark and an anti quark.  As soon as it is released from the nucleus, the two particles annihilate each other converting their mass into energy in the form of gamma rays in a thin beam radiating in opposite directions.  Gamma ray burst (GBR) is the cause of the most destructive force in the Universe.  In the atmosphere of Earth and within ball lightning the energy from the explosion is so great that it sends particles from the atmosphere into the mesosphere creating noctilucent clouds. The infusion of energy within the GBR causes the plama alpha particles to fly apart.  The particles being light in weight make their way into the atmosphere and some even make it to the ionosphere.  In essence carbon mass is removed.

When ball lightning infects the human body, all the carbon atoms in the infected area go into the excited state.  If the ball lightning is not so energetic  and it leaves the body quickly, the person may not be aware of it at all.  Sometimes the person has illusions since the chemistry of the brain is affected.  Some victims complain of missing time for instance.  If the ball lightning becomes witch lightning, then the human combusts spontaneously (SHC).  Not only humans, but airplanes are prone to being infected by ball lightning.  Actually nothing is immune from being infected by ball lightning  -- not even tall buildings.
